Minimally Invasive Gum Recession Treatment

The gums are the thick pink tissue around your teeth and their job is to provide a thick, healthy seal around the tooth so that plaque, food, and bacteria can be easily cleaned away by your brush and floss. Gum recession is a condition where the gums lose that seal by thinning and shrinking away from the teeth. When that seal is lost, bacteria can now crawl deeper into the gum tissue which may lead to other concerns like inflammation, root cavities, and more recession.

The most common way to treat gum recession is called a gum graft. The goal of gum grafting is to thicken the gum tissue, thereby strengthening the seal of the gum to the tooth so that your brush and floss can keep the area clean and healthy for a long time. In order to strengthen the gums, a piece of tissue is surgically placed into the thinning area and sutured in place. That graft will then grow into new gum tissue, identical to the patient’s own gums, and provide a thick healthy band of tissue for a long time.

Our team strives to provide the outstanding results but also minimize the post-operative recovery. Dr. Setter has been specially trained in advanced minimally invasive gum recession treatments. You may have heard of the Pinhole Technique, where recession treatment is provided through tiny “pinholes” in the gums. Dr. Setter uses a technique with slight modifications and advancements that keeps the minimally invasive approach but enhances the results. The gums can be advanced up the root without incisions using tiny sutures that requires magnifying glasses to place. In many cases, we don’t have to take the tissue from the patient’s palate which reduces post-operative discomfort and speeds the healing. Dr. Setter also uses special healing gels as well as an all-natural, homeopathic recovery protocol to enhance the body’s healing. The result is thick, healthy gum tissue that looks, feels, and works exactly like the patient’s own!
